Rashad Tiam Watt
ASLA
Landscape Designer
Rashad grew up in a small agricultural community in the Philippines, surrounded by a diverse landscape shaped by tropical monsoons and intense heat. She fondly remembers trees that not only provided delicious fruits and refuge from the scorching sun, but also served as natural playgrounds and gathering places. The province Rashad lived in was notably influenced by volcanic ash from Mt. Pinatubo, whose eruption—one of the largest of the 20th century—caused widespread destruction, but later enriched the soil, supporting new growth. The resilience of her hometown amidst this ecological adversity has always inspired Rashad and sparked her deep interest in communities, resilient landscapes, and design.
Rashad joined Living Habitats as a landscape designer, bringing a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from the University of Wisconsin – Madison, and four years of professional design experience. Her work across the Midwest includes brownfield waterfront redevelopment, park master planning, and urban design, all of which emphasize collaboration, engagement, and thorough technical documentation. As a designer, Rashad strives to create spaces that are diverse, inclusive, and adaptable. Her approach reflects a deep commitment to shaping environments that enhance and uplift communities.
“Here at Living Habitats, I have had the incredible opportunity to work on the Discovery Partners Institute (DPI) Headquarters, which is part of the University of Illinois System (UIUC). This project is a keystone urban infill project in Chicago’s new 78 Neighborhood west of downtown and adjacent to the South Branch of the Chicago River. It has been an honor to collaborate with a distinguished team of architects, engineers, designers, and other esteemed professionals all working in tandem to advance the project. This experience has underscored for me the value of teamwork and the creative potential that emerges when different disciplines come together.”
