Design Review Board Member
The University of Wisconsin-Madison Design Review Board is the official architectural review committee for the University. The paid Board is established to review the architectural and site design for all new buildings, building additions, landscape designs, and studies for major physical change on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus as defined in the current Campus Framework Plan and Guidelines. It is chaired by the Assistant Vice Chancellor of Campus Planning & Design and University Architect in the Department of Facilities Planning & Management.
Heidi Natura has served on this Board since early 2020, attending monthly meetings at which numerous and varied project presentations are made by professional firms ranging from local small businesses to international practices, addressing significant historic renovations, as well as new constructions. Projects are reviewed in detail by the Board over multiple presentations at specific project design milestones to determine if the architecture and site design follows the intent and guidelines of the approved Campus Framework Plan with a focus on each project’s unique aspects.
With voting members that represent a wide range of applied design experience, the Board works to promote and assure a high level of design quality of public open spaces and landscapes, architectural form and exterior building appearance, and primary interior public spaces. This elevates the discussion around any individual building and site to include how it relates to the larger campus’ historical and contemporary context. Review meetings include pedestrian and vehicular circulation patterns and connections to and protections for important open space systems, as well as implementation of the University’s sustainability goals.
