Lake County
Landscape Master Plan & Former Winchester House Site Design

This was the first milestone for Lake County’s aspirational goals of preserving the appearance of the Libertyville government Campus, lowering long-term maintenance and operational resource needs, and developing site-specific approaches for the wider portfolio of Lake County facilities.

As part of Lake County’s long-term vision for a comprehensive landscape master plan, Living Habitats was asked to consider a planting redesign for the Former Winchester House site, a nearly ten-acre parcel of the County’s Libertyville campus that sits at a high-profile intersection for vehicular traffic. Site inventory work included data collection of existing vegetation, soils, topography, current stormwater patterns, and review of remaining infrastructure from the site’s previous uses. Acting as a gateway to the County campus and administrative buildings, the goal is for Winchester site to showcase native plantings, limit the use of turf, provide a trail system through the site for pedestrians, preserve existing planting and utilize BMPs so that the site could be treated as case study for other sites across Lake County. The site is home to several mature specimen trees that will be mostly preserved in the proposed planting updates.
