Chicago Botanic Garden
Barbara Brown Nature Preserve

Living Habitats worked side-by-side with renowned landscape architect Darrel Morrison in the planning and documentation for the proposed improvements, natural habitat, and passive recreational amenities for the Barbara Brown Nature Reserve Project located in the southeast corner of the Chicago Botanic Garden. This benefactor was intent on creating site improvements that prioritized bird life in the underutilized part of the Garden.

Highly degraded woods choked with buckthorn were cleared and replanted creating a series of native habitats ranging from floating-leaved aquatic to upland prairie and woodland.  A somewhat hidden granular walking path winds through the Nature Reserve connecting habitats, vistas, and several overlook structures for bird watchers that use the preserve for respite and exercise. Areas of dense shrub plantings are targeted at supporting certain bird species and to create areas where views close and then open again.
