Oregon Middle School
Site Master Plan

Oregon Middle School requested that Living Habitats develop a long-term master plan for their existing site to find ways to expand outdoor learning and site stewardship activities. Portions of the site include degraded woodland and wetlands, as well as vast expanses of underutilized upland turf yard areas that are surrounded by active use recreational fields.

Given limited public-school funding as a rule, the master plan offers guidance that individual fund-raising activities can organize around and implement in an incremental fashion towards a long-term vision of outdoor education becoming more fully integrated with their learning curriculum across multiple subject matters ranging from biology to physical education to music.

Following a complete site inventory of existing conditions, conceptual planning documents were developed that informed final master plan content that was vetted with a working group of schoolteachers and administrators.

Teachers kicked off initial phases of the plan by organizing student and parent volunteers to conduct stewardship activities in the remnant woods area and by installing native plantings around the school grounds, including a welcoming prairie garden.
